He completed the 500 M swim, 25 K mountain bike ride, and 7 K cross country run in 1 hour, 19 minutes, 17 seconds, passing Bobby Barnes, (his mentor and a two-time prior winner) in the final1/2 mile after being down over five minutes to Barnes after the swim. Barnes’ 2nd place time was 1 hour 21 minutes and 9 seconds and third place, Patrick Lee, came in at 1 hour, 32 minutes and 5 seconds. Bromfield won a Cannondale Mountain Bike, an Air Jamaica Express ticket to any Caribbean destination, and a Nike shirt. Rachel Herould from Kingston captured first place for the women. Her award was a weekend for two at Swept Away and a Nike watch. She completed the course in 1 hour, 49 minutes, and 39 seconds. The Triathlon is the largest yearly fundraiser for Breds, the Treasure Beach Foundation, a local non-profit community development group promoting education, sports, cultural heritage, environmental awareness, and health in Treasure Beach. The most recent project is the completion of an addition on the Sandy Bank Primary School, comprised of two classrooms, a computer lab, library and eight bathrooms. The Triathlon has gained worldwide exposure from articles appearing in Triathlete Magazine and Women’s Health and Fitness magazines. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the event, and it holds promise to be the most successful Triathlon as Breds will kick-off the awesome task of building the first real sports park in the Treasure Beach area. The Jake’s Off Road Triathlon is made possible by the commitment of our sponsors, Digicel, Nike, Air Jamaica Express, Caribbean Producers, Wisynco, Jamaica Triathlon Association, Tru-Juice, Alpart, Sunset Resort, Strawberry Hill, Treasure Tours, Swept Away, Tranquility Bay, Appleton, and Kinkead’s Texaco. |
